Pipilotti Rist with her work Wunderlampe [Magic Lamp] in Laufen.

Pipilotti Rist

[...] Wunderlampe belongs to a period in the artist’s career when she was just about to achieve international success. It is typical of the artist’s work: poetic and analytical, colorful and banal, independent. Rist is, however, not simply an important figure in recent video art but also an artist who has become known to a wider audience thanks to her offbeat, humorous, provocative public performances, which have made her very popular.

Today Rist works primarily on spacious multimedia installations. In 2008 her installation Pour Your Body Out (7354 Cubic Meters) was on view at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The artist uses moving images to create atmospheric spaces in which she unfolds another theme that has been central to her work from the beginning: coming to terms with the (female) body.

Pipilotti Rist’s exhibitions are conceived as intimate situations. She designs moving images that enable the audience to experience proximity to and distance from the physical in the form of installations.
