[...] The video installation Wunderlampe in the Ricola Collection was exhibited at the artist’s first solo exhibition, at the Galerie Stampa in Basel in 1993. Also on view in that exhibition was the work TV-Lüster (TV chandelier, 1993), which is now on loan from the Swiss Confederation to the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen.

Wunderlampe (1993) is an early work by the artist. At the time she was producing not only videos but also single objects and installations.

Rist was experimenting with video and in the process alluded to television as an entertainment medium that promised to bring the world into our living rooms. Back then it was a new area of work just being discovered by artists. These artists took as their theme the electronic image framed by a monitor that could be broadcast simultaneously to several locations and received in parallel by numerous viewers.

Video technology, which first became affordable and hence widely used during the 1980s, enabled artists to appropriate these images from others, to produce their own images with a camera, and to make the monitor a tool for broadcasting these images. [...]
